ACEP at Work: VDOS Project Logbook – Project Update
Project Description:
The Video Debris Observation System (VDOS) consists of the design, construction and testing of a remote video observation system for detecting river debris to protect hydrokinetic turbines.

Work continues on the VDOS project moving closer to deployment in the field. Work in the recent weeks has been focused on powering the system and securing the system for the field. The bottom, power supply compartment of the job box was rewired with all new wires and connections. The batteries, generator, inverter and solar panel are now all connected together.
Once the power supply was completely wired in, the top, communication compartment was connected to the power supply and the system was put online. While online, the configuration of each device was checked to make sure everything was functioning correctly.
With the system online, a few housekeeping items were completed to reduce the wiring mess. Power and communication cords to the camera and routers were run through a new port on the side of the job box to connect the devices to the communication compartment.
The PLC (programmable logic controller) has been installed in the communication compartment and is in the process of being configured. A code is being written that will monitor battery voltage and start the generator to recharge the batteries when battery voltage is low.
