Dana Greci shared data that the Department of Developmental Education is gathering for their NADE (National Association of Developmental Educators) certification. Dana emphasized that the data set she is presenting is in response to specific questions related to departmental NADE certification: 1. How many students place into developmental courses? 2. Of all those that place how many actually enroll ? 3. What is the grade distributions of developmental courses? 4. What number of developmental courses do we offer and number of sections of each? 5. How many students successfully complete the highest level of developmental courses? 6.What is the rate of student retention through 24 credits 7. How are grades in Dev correlated with college level (subsequent courses?) She also noted that this data is incomplete at this stage and has not been completely analyzed by the department. Amy sent data on pass rates for core and developmental courses which was forwarded to her from Dana Thomas. We did not fully address this data at this meeting. Sarah Stanley is interested in studying students who fail. She is planning a longitudinal study using case studies of student failure and a tree regression analysis. She would like to include undergraduate students in the research. Diane did a similar project at UAA. We discussed questions for Dana Thomas, who will attend our next meeting, such as: What data is being collected already? We know that the data should be aggregated by some qualitative and quantitative measures (older/ returning students, rural, seeking associate or certificates…) What do administrators look at? What are they analyzing? We noted that retention is not an educator’s goal; it is an administrator’s goal. What data does administration want from us? We will have Dana Thomas join us for the April meeting to address any questions we may have after we've reviewed the data. Cindy would like us to end the year with specific questions or initiatives for next year. Committee members should send email to Cindy with questions for Dana Thomas. She will narrow it down to a reasonable number. Veterans Support Center: Two guest speakers came to speak on the support they offer for veterans who are now students. We discussed some of the issues returning vets face and how faculty could respond to these issues in the classroom.
