Field Camp Instructors
Field Camp Director:
Dr. Jochen Mezger
Assistant Term Professor of Geology; 308a Reichardt, Phone: (907) 474-7809, Email:
jemezger@alaska.edu
Dr. Mezger obtained a PhD in Geology (1997) from the University of Alberta (Canada), studying metamorphic rocks around Kluane Lake in the SW Yukon. Following a post-doc at the Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz and a teaching position at the Martin-Luther University Halle, both in Germany, Jochen accepted a position as Field Camp Director at UAF in 2013.
Aside from the Geology Field Camp, he is also teaching Field & Computer Methods (Geos F225), Tectonics (Geos F309), Structural Geology (Geos F314) and organizes the Geoscience Seminar (Geos F482/682).
Jochen is a structural and metamorphic geologist whose research focuses on strongly deformed and metamorphosed rocks. His favourite rocks are mylonites and staurolite-cordierite schists. Until he came to 91视频, he spent a lot of time hiking the Pyrenees Mountains of France and Spain collecting as many schist and gneiss samples as possible. In 91视频 he discovered that also fossils can enjoy deformation! If you want to know more about his work, have a look at his page.
Dr. Paul McCarthy
Professor of Geology; Phone: (907) 474-6894, Email:pjmccarthy@alaska.edu
Dr. McCarthy is a sedimentologist whose research focusses on paleolandscape evolution, alluvial architecture and nonmarine sequence stratigraphy. Paul will expertly guide you through the sediments of the Healy project (Field Camp Part 1) and introduce you to the Limestone Gap stratigraphy.
