Training

UA Safe Title IX Training is an annual required training for all UA students, employees, and volunteers. 

As of August 2024, UAF students, employees, and volunteers are required to take the UA Safe Title IX Training through UAF’s new learning management system, Canvas.

If departments would like to request training presented by the UAF Title IX Coordinator, please contact Kaydee Van Flein at uaf-tix@alaska.edu. 

If you have an “@alaska.edu” email address/UA ID (all UAF students, staff and faculty, and most volunteers):

  1. Visit the (or visit the and select “UA Safe Title IX Training”)
  2. Click “Login with your UA ID”
  3. Click “UA Log In” and log in using your UA credentials
  4. Return to the training enrollment page and refresh the tab 
  5. Click “Enroll Now”
  6. Click “Go To Course” to open Canvas and start the training
    • If you do not see the “Go To Course” button and the page says you’re already enrolled, click on your name in the top right corner and select “My Courses” to navigate to your Canvas Dashboard. The UA Safe Title IX Training will be in your courses.

If you do not have an “@alaska.edu” email address/UA ID (most non-UAF affiliates, some volunteers, and others):

  1. Visit the (or visit the and select “UA Safe Title IX Training”)
  2. Click “Guest Account” if you already have a guest account in Canvas or create an account
    • Signing into an existing account
      • Select “Guest Account”
      • Click “Guest Login” and log in using your email address and password
      • Return to the training enrollment page and refresh the tab 
      • Click “Enroll Now”
    • Creating an account
      • Click “Enroll Now” and complete the signup process
      • Complete the signup process (Please use your full name when filling out the form. The UAF unit department or program you’re volunteering/working with will need to match the name and email address associated with this account to the information you’ve already provided them on other documents.).
      • Canvas will send a message to your email address with a link to set your account password.
  3. Click “Go To Course” to open Canvas and start the training
    • If you do not see the “Go To Course” button and the page says you’re already enrolled, click on your name in the top right corner and select “My Courses” to navigate to your Canvas Dashboard. The UA Safe Title IX Training will be in your courses.

The UA Safe Title IX Training discussed sensitive issues relating to sex and gender-based discrimination, harassment, and violence. If you require support or would like to speak to someone about this training, please utilize the resources available to you.

Employee support resources:

  • The is a free and confidential resource available to UA Employees, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Student support resources:

  • The offers a limited number of free counseling sessions to students (Fall Semester: 6 sessions, Spring Semester: 6 sessions, and Summer Semester: 4 sessions). If you have utilized all of your free appointments for the semester and the $25 fee for additional counseling sessions is a significant financial barrier, please contact the Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability to explore your options.

We recognize that some individuals who may be asked to take this training have experienced sex discrimination, sexual violence, or sex-based harassment. In the event you are unable to complete this training due to past experiences, please submit a release request.

Non-UA employees and noncredentialed Individuals: 

Sponsoring departments should preserve the completion certificates of non-UA employees and noncredentialed individuals.

Volunteers:

Departments will complete the UA General Volunteer Checklist and preserve the UA Safe Title IX Training completion certificate with the checklist. More information on the volunteer process can be found on the .

All volunteers at the university are required to complete “UA Safe Title IX Training” prior to their volunteer service. 

The deadline to complete the training is October 31. There are a few limited exceptions to the October 31 deadline:

  • New or transferring students (spring semester only)
      • Students transferring or beginning classes in the Spring semester have until March 31 to complete the training.
  • New employees
      • New employees are required to complete the training within 30 days from their date of hire.
  • New volunteers
    • New volunteers are required to complete the training prior to engaging in university volunteer work.

The Title IX training cycle is from July 1 to June 30 the following year.

For the current FY25 training cycle, training completed anytime between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, will be valid until June 30, 2025.

All University of 91ĘÓƵ (UA) employees, all degree-seeking students, (which includes certificate, associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. as well as students living in campus housing, online students, North Star College students enrolled at the university or on national/international exchange) and all volunteers at the university are required to complete the UA Safe Title IX Training annually.

UAF students, employees, and volunteers should take the training in Canvas. University of 91ĘÓƵ System Office employees and UAA/UAS students, employees, and volunteers should complete the training in Blackboard. Visit the to learn more about training requirements for each campus.

 

The consequences for failing to fulfill your training requirements depend on your role at the university.

Students:

  • Students who fail to complete the mandatory Title IX Training will be considered out of compliance.

Employees:

  • As outlined in the Chancellor's Policy on training, supervisors are required to ensure compliance with required training and address an untrained individual's performance within the employee's performance evaluation. The Title IX Coordinator provides training reports to unit leadership (at a minimum) weekly during the last month of the training cycle.

Volunteers:

  • Volunteers are required to complete the training prior to their service, failure to do so will bar the individual from volunteering until they've taken the training.

Yes, Title IX training is an annual requirement for all students, employees, and volunteers and is refined and updated with new information each year.
No. If you are affiliated with the UA System Office, UAA or UAS and have completed the Blackboard version of the training or if you have attended a live/in-person training hosted by the UAF Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability after July 1, 2024, you have fulfilled your training requirements for the July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025 training cycle and do not need to take this version of the training. As of Summer 2024, UAF is no longer using Blackboard and UAF students, employees, and volunteers are now required to complete the UA Safe Title IX Training in Canvas.
Yes. You must still complete the UA Safe Title IX Training. The University of 91ĘÓƵ is required to train individuals on UA-specific policies and procedures, notify individuals of VAWA and Clery information, as well as provide information on resources available at each university (UAF, UAA, UAS). This is different from the information and required processes individuals are trained on elsewhere.
Yes. All degree-seeking students and all employees are required to take the training. Title IX responsibilities and resources apply to all UA community members, regardless of where and how they study/work.

There are many Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) training and workshops offered online through the  to help increase your knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and core concepts in the ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA).

UAF's  offers a wide variety of training, assistance, and resources to instructors teaching through eCampus. Instructors who are creating instructional video and would like assistance with captioning their content using 3Play Media or assistance with a professional captioning service can contact eLearning. Faculty and instructors from across UAF, CTC, and CIS, including adjuncts and TAs, are eligible for this assistance.

UAF eCampus offers short and long-form  for teachers across UAF. Start with The Basics, learning about Blackboard and the foundations of online learning, Grow your Practice by learning from faculty colleagues and designers, and then contribute by working with others in a long-form program.  is a free online course (with option to earn a certificate for $99) offered by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE). This training covers the fundamentals of web accessibility, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (UAF websites must meet a minimum of  WCAG2AA accessibility compliance), how to check web pages for accessibility and how to fix issues identified. It is suitable for technical and non-technical learners, students/instructors/professionals, and allows you to focus on the topics that are most applicable to your needs.

Green Dot is a proven intervention strategy that teaches bystanders how to effectively and safely intervene in situations of potential interpersonal violence. It also works with participants to promote healthy norms and empower them to take action within their own community.

UA Human Resources' Labor and Employee Engagement Office provides on monthly topics, series, and through in-person and on-demand self-lead modalities to employees. Other training can be located through the in the learning library.

Learn how to safely and effectively respond to possible opioid overdoses and preserve a life! This training covers basic education on common opioids, the warning signs of an overdose, how to administer Naloxone (an opioid overdose reversal medication), and follow-up recommendations and resources. As a part of the training, participants will receive a Naloxone kit.

UAF takes the protection of minors very seriously. To learn more about required training, policies, authorized adults, mandated reporting, background checks, camps, mandated reporting, mentoring and chaperoning youth, and additional details go to the Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management website.

Boundaries can be so hard to set. In this presentation, we will explore the essential concept of personal & professional boundaries, why they are crucial for maintaining healthy relationships, and how to effectively set and enforce them in various aspects of life.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.
