The last semester to run a course in Blackboard for UAF faculty is spring 2024. Most faculty and classes have already moved over to the newly adopted Canvas learning management system.

    In 2020, the U.S. Department of Education updated regulatory definitions of distance learning within the Distance Education and Innovation Ruling that all higher education institutions receiving Title IV funds must comply with. The regulation became effective July 1, 2021, and requires that for all online courses for which students may use federal financial aid (Title IV funds), there is "regular and substantive interaction between students and instructors." From the time students arrive to the time they graduate, we have many events that serve as milestones in their academic journey. The most coveted milestone in this academic journey is the conferral of a degree and the grand commencement ceremony that celebrates the achievement of our graduating students. UAF is about to celebrate its 101st commencement on May 6 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, other commencement ceremonies at the community campuses, and special graduation events. These celebrations are rooted in historic practices, have a deeper purpose, and great symbolic significance.
